CLAIM BY ORGANISER. Democratic Party. NUMBER OF DEFENDANTS. CASE AT AUCKLAND. «.By Telegraph.—Press Association;. AUCKLAND, Sept. 15. A sequel to the general election was heard in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Avhen several Avell-knoAvn personalities, >vhat Avas the Demo- . crat Party, Avere sued by Harry Charles Baulf, political organiser, claiming to recover the balance of salary and expenses alleged to be oAviug for his Avork as the Auckland organiser for the Party. Mr. Wyvem Wilson, S.M., Avas on the Bench. Mr. J. F. W. Dickson appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. A. K. North for Mr. William Goodfel-„ loav, Avho Avas in Court. Mr. H. J. Butler appeared for Mr. A. E. Davy, Avho Avas not present Mr. A. St. Clair BroAvn for Mr. J. B. Donald, who was present, and Mr. B. Elliot for Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. The lastnamed Avas not present, but evidence,*** taken in Wellington Avas commerfffjd on by Mr. Dickson.
Plaintiff claimed that defendants were officers of an incorporated body known as the NeAV Zealand Democrat Political Organisation, of Avhich one of the defendants, Mr. J. B. Donald, Avas chairman and Mr. Spencer Clark, also a defendant, was secretary. The defendants, Messrs. Goodfellow, Davy and Hislop, Avere officers of the organisation on the executive committee.
Baulf claimed that in October, 1934, he Avas employed by Davy at a salary of £7 Aveekly Avith expenses. He claimed recovery of £195, the balance oAving.
Mi*. Dickson said that Baulf Avas engaged in 1934 by Davy, Avho said CoodfelloAV Avould be finding £25,000 cash and £SOOO himself and tAvo others £SOOO each. He was arranging the balance. GoodfelloAv. subsequently confirmed this by saying ho Avould finance the Auckland executive for at least six, months. Mr. Dickson said GoodfelloAv continued the payments for some months until he fell out with Davy and resigned. “The position of Hislop is an extraordinary one,” said Mr. Dickson, in commenting on Hislop’s evidence taken in Wellington. “Hislop said he Avould devote his life and talents to the services of his country and the cause of the Democrat Party. He, in fact, received £3250, of Avhich he . alleges he Avas to received £IOOO for himself and three payments of £IOO per month.” This Avas apparently done, said Mr. Dickson, to placate his partners for the time spent for thp Democrat Party. Hislop admitted only having received tAvo monthly payments of £IOO per month.
Mr. Elliot: He admits nothing. Mr. Dickson contended that as a member of the party, Hislop was partly liable to this debt. ,• ilr. Elliot said the statement made by Mr. Dickson was incorrect.
Mr. Dickson said that as far as Goodfellow was concerned, he and Davy entered into an agreement in 1934, whereby Davy Avas to receive £1250 per year for three years and the committee Avas to be Davy, GoodfelloAv and two nominees of GoodfelloAV. The case is proceeding.
