INTERFERENCE WITH DAM.

BOROUGH SUPPLY SET BACK.

WATER AVAILABLE TO-NIGHT.

A representative of the “Thames Star’’ made a tour of the damaged portions of the water race in the Kauaeranga Valley to-day, and was surprised at the extent of the havoc worked by the storm.

The relief workers have almost completed the clearing of the cut-

ting, and water is now coming through to the race from a diverted stream, but the tlow is not sufficient to enable the water to reach Thames in any appreciable quantity. Another stream some distance above the cutting was diverted yesterday, but last evening the dam was opened up and in consequence the flow into the race was greatly diminished todav.

About a mile and half further up Lite valley a chain of the race, skirting a cliff above the river, is being restored, and our representative was informed that the race would bo ready to receive water to-night.

But for the interference with the dam of the diverted stream, sufficient water avouUl have been available in the town portion of the race to have enabled pumping into the reservoirs last evening. The letting go of the dam' set back 2T hours at least the prospects of a supply being available to the borough. MINISTER’S VISIT. MR. THORN EXPLAINS PROBLEMS On Wednesday Mr. J. Thorn, M.P,. wrote’ the Minister for Mines, Mr. P. C. Webb, relative to the condition of the Kauaeranga water race and explaining the problems confronting the Thames Borough in this connection. He has asked Mr. Webb to familiarise himself with the situation Avith a view to consultations during his coming visit- to the electorate.
