BRILLIANT DAYLIGHT METEOR
A tremendous silver ball flashing to earth from the direction of the sun was seen by Mrs. Drake, of Houto, North Auckland, on Thursday morning.
At 10.45 a.m. the sun was obscured by a dark cloud, and Mrs. Drake was able to see clearly what she described as a beautiful sight. The ball fell in a south-westerly direction, and was apparently quite close to Houto. Behind it streaked a vivid red flash which seemed to extent!, Mrs. Drake said, from tho sun. The whole phenomenon was over almost in a flash.
The phenomenon was also witnessed by several people in Auckland, and from their descriptions Dr. Brown, of the physics department at the Auckland University College, identified it as a meteor. Brilliant meteors are common enough, he said, but are seldom seen in the daytime.
