With the exception of a period when the Galatea Estate was being opened up and other extensive public works were in progress, there is at present a larger number of men engaged on public works in the Rotorua area than has been the case for several years past. In addition to 75 men engaged on the aerodrome improvement scheme, there are at present about 480 men engaged on various road improvement works in different parts of the district. Practically all the sawmills in the Central King Country resumed work on Monday after the holidays, and during the next few months several new mills will commence operations, Few mill workers are out of employment at the present time, and providing the demand for timber keeps up the output from King Country mills this year should exceed that of 1935.
