Mayor's Honorarium.
INCREASED TO £IOO. CUT PARTLY RESTORED. TRIBUTES TO HIS SERVICES. When the borough estimates, submitted by the Commissioner, Mr. t. L. Grange, were under consideration by the Advisory Committee yesterday afternoon, Mr. C. J. Garland referred to what he termed the "drastic cut" in the Mayor's honorarium in October, 1932, when, in view of the state of the finances at that time, the committee decided to reduce the amount of the honorarium from £l5O to £65, but the Mayor declined to accept more than £6O a year, at which figure it has since stood.
Mr. Garland said the reduction was warranted at the time, but in view of the numerous calls upon the Mayor's time and funds he thought that the improved position of tho borough finances justified an increase to £IOO. He did not know what the attitude of the bondholders would be. The Commissioner said that even though the Mayor had been relieved of a considerable amount of work in connection with borough affairs by the appointment of a Commissioner, he had not been relieved of any calls on his time and purse. Mr. C. S. Donovan thought it competent for the committee to recommend a restoration of the honorarium to £IOO.
The Commissioner said the Thames Borough Commissioner Act provided for the fixing of the Mayor's honorarium by the Advisory Committee.
Mr. Garland moved that the honorarium be increased to £IOO. Tho motion was seconded by Mr. S. C. Muir, of the Finance Committee, and carried unanimously.
The Mayor briefly returned thanks for the committee's consideration and the tributes to his services.
