"Smithy's" Offer.

SERVICE THIS YEAR. SCHEME SUGGESTED. BRITISH 'PLANES TOO SLOW. (A. and N.Z. Cable). SYDNEY, Feb. 28. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith announces that he is prepared to start a trans-Tasman air service between Sydney and New Zealand if he ii given a reasonable subsidy and allowed to choose his own machines. He says the service could be started this year, between. Sydney and New Plymouth. The journey would occupy eight hours. It would carry only mails until its safety had been established. Sir Charles indicated that British machines were too slow for the schedule he had mapped out. He mentioned the names of several American types capable of a speed of 200 miles an hour. He said either land aeroplanes or flying-boats could be used, according to the financial backing forthcoming. He suggested a bi-weekly service each way.
