More Pay: Fewer Hours.

CHRISTCHURCH TRAMWAYMEN. INTERESTING EXPERIMENT. (By Telegtapft—Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 31. A new agreement between the Christchurch Tramway Board and the Christchurch Tramway Employees’ Union provides for increases in pay and improved conditions of work. It operates from to-morrow. The feature of the agreement is that an experiment will be made with a 40-hour week in the car shed section, the reduction of hours being accompanied by increased pay. Tho experiment is the first of its kind in New Zealand, and will be followed with keen interest.

The increases in pay range from id. to 2Jd. an hour. Conductors will get 1/93, an additional penny an hour, and all motormen 1/104, with no extra pay for trolley bus drivers. Permanent-way men will be paid 1/10. Holidays have been increased in several departments.
