Tragic Unemployment.
CHRISTCHURCH CASES. RUSH FOR R.S.A. JOB. (By Telegraph. — Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, June 6. Seventy-three applications were received by< the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association for the position of employment officer, carrying a salary, .of £4 per week. Among the applicants was a civil engineer now employed as a labouier at a wage of 10/8 per day, ami also a solicitor with a family of five. “It was a very pathetic task to deal with the applications,” said the president at a meeting of the executive. He added that he could not help but feel distressed that so many men with commercial and educational training were seeking a position of that nature, That feeling was intensified when the committee interviewed seven of the applicants, who were all men of standing. Finally a man of wide commercial experience was appointed. A curious point in connection with tobacco culture is that the pooiest soil will often yield the best crop. The gumlands of the North, or some of them, too mean to grow anything worth while for the sustenance of man or beast, will frequently produce a high-grade tobacco. But the cultivation of the plant is only the start. Soil and climate must b<J * carefully studied, and then there is the maturing of the leaf and the' blending, two operations demanding expert knowledge, skill and experience if the best results ,are to be attained, and in the case of our popular New Zealand toasted tobacco there is in addition to the foregoing processes one other of supreme importance —the toasting, of the leaf. Toasting it is that renders the five brands, Rivorhcad Gold, Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Cut Plug, No. 10 (Bullshead) and Desert Gold, harmless to the smoker, however freely he may indulge, and also imparts to these famous brands their incomparable flavour and aroma They are the only./..toasted brands manufactured —and are unique! But beware of imitations! There are several about!—Ad.
