Anzac Day.
TEACHERS’ ATTITUDE. r.-T-r-i MATAMATA COMPLAINT. EDUCATION BOARD DISCUSSION. (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, June 6. Because of what it deemed the “noticeable absence of teachers” from the ceremonies held in Matamata on Anzac Day, the Matamata branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote to the Education Board to-day saying that jf the teaching staff of a school did not have reasonable representation at a public service of such a kind, the children could hardly be expected to profit by their example. The chairman of the Board said the matter was somewhat difficult. Anzac Day was not a holiday, but a holy day. He did not know that the Board could compel teachers to attend Anzac observances, but the Board expected all teachers to realise the play the day held in the public estimation. They should do all in their power to inculcate proper reverence for the day. A member suggested that teachers should 4 be circularised, blit others thought that this might suggest compulsion, which was undesirable. The Board will inform the Matamata R.S.A. of its attitude.
