Takapuna Races.
THE CUP FIELD. EAGER ROSE’S PROSPECTS. NO DIVISION IN PLATE. The Takapuna Jockey Club’s spring'-ineeting will open to-morrow and conclude on" Monday. Good fields are engaged in most of the events, and scratchings in the Takapuna Plate have reduced the number to the safety limit so that divisions will not be necessary. Included in the fields are several horses which won at Te Rapa and others which showed promising form there and at the Paeroa meeting earlier, and the form shown should be a good guide to prospects, though post positions and ability to begin smartly have a decided bearing on a horse’s chances on this turning course. The Cup Field. Baroscope (9.0) heads the Cup field, and though he failed at To Rapa his condition is good, and consistency entitles him to respect. Speedmint (8.12) disappointed her supporters in the Waikato Cup, but would have been closer than third with fi better passage. She may atone to-morrow. . Merry Damon (8.10), though approaching the veteran stage, has been going well in training, and the distance will be in his favour.
Master Norval (8.7) J a winner at Ellerslie and in the Waikato Cup event, is very fit at present,-and has a good chance here. Alloy (7.10) will probably find the turning course against him. . Eager Rose (7.9) can set a merry £ace, as she demonstrated at Te Rapa, and this mare will take a lot of beating if better handled this time. She should be improved with the racing at Hamilton. Maori Boy (7.7) likes this course, and a wet day would greatly enhance his prospects. Mungatoon (7.4) is back to form and improving. He may prove a tough proposition if he runs up to recent form.
Of the 7.0 candidates, Palm Queen, winner of the Hack Cup at Te Rapa, looks the pick. This mare can unwind a great finish, but the company appears too select here. Likely Runners.
