THREE CASES REVIEWED.

UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE. The Thames Unemployment Committee met lust evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr. S. Ensor (chairman), Messrs. C. S. Donovan, J. McCormick, S. Smith (Government certifying officer), and A. Chapman (secretary). ,r ' Apologies for absence were received from J. W. Danby, H. Crawford, H. Lo'we, D. Mackay, H. R. Bush and J. WV Smith. Borough Relief',' Works.

The borough foreman reported that there were at present 107 relief workers employed on borough works as follows: —Water race restoration, 100; drainage, 2; Tararu cemetery, 2; borough office, 1; certifying officer, 2. The Mayor remarked that the work of restoring the Avater race should not take that there were a hundred men On the job. Mr. Smith said that there were on the average fifty,Men a day engaged on the making the necessary cut at the site of the recent break. « . Easter Holidays.

The ttnemployment Board notified that relief workers would be paid for the holidays at Easter and on Anzae Day unless such holidays fell within their stand- down week. Mr Smith pointed, out that there was a possibility o! 'friction unless the allocation of. work'for the periods stated was avoided.. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Mr. Donovan, it was decided to recommend to the employing authorities tnat.np; work be allotted for the days concerned, and that the matter men engaged on the prospecting and mining schemes be the hands Of the mining exequtive. ! to take whatever steps might be necessary to give themthe benefit of the" holidays.
