GIRL’S BODY FOUND.
UNDER TONS OF SOIL. Lying Face Downwards. PATHOLOGIST CALLED IN. POLICE OBTAIN CHANCE CLUE. ißy Telegraph—JtTesa Association..) WELLINGTON, July 13 After digging carrieu on since Wednesday, the body of Pliyllis Ava Symons, aged 17, who had been missing for more than a fortnight, was recovered yesterday afternoon buried in the spoil dumped from the new tunnel near Kilbirnie. The police, acting on conclusions arrived at by chance remarks which came to thgir ears on Wednesday, began to investigate the area, where a considerable depth of spoil had been placed already for the purpose of making a new park. Had the clue not been obtained the body, which was then at a depth of several feet, would have been buried beneath many feet of soil. Digging was carried on for three days by a gang of 80 unemployed, aided by a mechanical navvy. The body was formally identified yesterday. - The body was found lying face down, covered with a sack, at the central portion of the dump, where the police seem to have been concentrating their attention. The actual discovery was made by Constable Tomlinson. Word was immediately sent for Dr Lynch, pathologist at the Wellington Hospital. The news spread and within the next hour a crowd of between 500 apd 600 people took up positions at various fences ti watch the proceedings. As soon as the pathologist arrived details of the position of the body and measurements were taken. A great deal depends upon the result of the post-mortem examination, which is to be made to-day.
