HOIST WITH OWN PETARD.

INCENDIARY BADLY BURNED. OLD MAN’S SENSELESS ACT. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 20. In the Supreme Court Max Butting,' aged 71, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for arson. About midnight the accused set fire to a small store which had been liberally sprinkled with petrol, and in the explosion and blaze the clothes were almost burnt off the accused. Counsel said that his ears were almost burned off and the flesh on his neck was so badly scorched that it had to be cut off. He had been in bed for two and. a half months, and was still suffering from the effects. Mr Justice Kennedy, in giving effect to the jury’s recommendation to mercy, said that it was obvious that tfie accused had been very severely punished by the pain-' and suffering which he had endured.
