AN INDUSTRIES BOARD.
PLEA FOR ESTABLISHMENT.
(By Telegraph,—Pres"s Association.) WELLINGTON, July 3.
The annual conference of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Association opened to-day. Mr F. Campbell, the president, in the course of a speech, stressed the value of exhibitions of locally-made goods at various centres. Hopes had been held of the establishment of an Industries Board, but this had not eventuated, but it was evident the Government realised the necessity for investigations by such a body. He was surprised, he said, that the portfolio of Industries and Commerce was apparently the least desired in Cabinet, whereas it' should claim the best efforts of the mostactive man to be found.
With regard to the unemployment report, he thought whatever waa brought down this session in the way of legislation deserved thoughtful support rather than idle destructive A progressive move of some kind was essential. He, personally, was strongly in favour of the return of immigration to the country. The trouble to-day was that New Zealand was stagnant. If industry was arranged to suit the country it would go ahead. \ The officers elected were: President, Mr G. Finn (Auckland); vicepresident, Mr J. T. Spears (Wellington); treasurer, Mr J. Findlay (Auckland); auditor, Mr F. N. Hill (Auckland). < : - ~.-,
