AN UNUSUAL POSITION.
SIR M. POMARE'S DEATH.
Most be Reported to Speaker 1
WITHIN TWELVE HOURS.
CASE WITHOUT PRECEDENT. (Bv Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 1. With the death in California of Sir Maui Pomare, an unusual position has arisen, one for, which no provision is made in the. Electoral Act* It is laid down ""that the registration of the death of any member of Parliament shall be reported within 12 hours to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, but there is no legal provision for initial steps to fill the vaovncy caused by a member dying outside of New Zealand. The death of Sir Maui Pomare provides a case that is without precedent' in ; New Zealand, for no member of Parliament has died in similar circumstances. It is. not likely that the byel x-ti on to fill the vacancy caused by Sir Maui Pomare's death will be taking place for some* considerable time. If the body is to be returned to New Zealand, it can be assumed that no action will be taken until then, but should the burial take place abroad, the difficulty would g have to be surmounted by accepting notification of death from some responsible person in California.
