SATURDAY'S FIRE.
OLD BURLINGTON ABLAZE.
BRIGADE'S GOOD SAVE. /'-•.'■•'
The sound of the fire bells at about four o'clock-on Saturday afternoon brought crowds to Brown Street, where it was found that the old Burlington Tea-Rooms were alight. Dence clouds of smoke rose from the burning building, but the brigade was quickly, on the scene and effected a remarkably save. The sight was not spectacular fou, as there was no wind, the dense pall of smoke rose high'above the town, spreading out in a mushroom effect, which was seen for miles around.
The building is owned by the Crocker estate, and is an old twostoreyed block of unoccupied shops.
What made the fire more serious was that the building is practically in the centre of the largest wooden block of buildings in the whole town, and had'there been any wind it was practically certain that the whole block would have gone. The Brigade has to its credit a Very valuable piece of work. There was no insurance.
