ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
OLD MAN SUICIDES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CAMBRIDGE, Sept. 3. Robert William Browne, a bachelor, aged 76, residing in Princes Street with an elderly- sister, committed suicide about noon yesterday by cutting his throat with a razor. The deceased, who was a retired farmer, was an old identity, and had been in ill-health for some considerable time. A few weeks ago he was discharged from a hospital.
CHILD DIES OF BURNS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 3. Marjorie. Shine, aged three years, of Wroxton Terrace, Fendalton, died at the hospital as the result of burns received in her pai’ents’ home yesterday while playing with lighted papers.
GATEKEEPER’S DEATH
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PAHIATUA, Sept. 3.
At the inquest on James Robert Symons, aged 48, residing at Ashhurst and a gatekeeper for the Manawatu Gorge, the coroner, Mr J. D. Wilson, returned a verdict that deceased died of injuries caused by being run into by a car driven by Charles Robertson, and that, in his opinion, Robertson did not take sufficient care to avoid such accident; further, the “Stop!” notice was disregarded, and the skid of the car wheels commenced before reaching the bridge, indicated excessive speed.
PINNED UNDER CAR
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HAMILTON, Sept, 3. A fatal motor accident occurred near Otorohanga yesterday afternoon, when Mr.. Leonard Neild, aged 50, of Ponsonhy, Auckland, was killed, Mr. Neild was a passenger in a car driven by Mr. S. J. Ray, sawmiller, of Waimiha, Otorohanga. He was travelling from Auckland to Mr. Ray’s home. When driving over the Waitomo Valley Road Mr. Ray found he had taken the wrong route. He turned, and in hacking the car struck a culvert. The vehicle overturned and Mr. Neild was pinned underneath and crushed. When he was extricated he was dead.
