AFTER A COURT CASE.
THE FURNITURE WRECKED

John Thomas, a half-bred Portuguese, against whom separation and "maintenance orders in.respect of ins wife and three children was made on Monday, owing to his persistent crue - -ty, which was of a particxilarly obnoxi,ous nature, gave himselfup to the police, and yesterday admitted 1 having assaulted wife at Taipuna railway 'Station when he was returning home. He told the magistrate, Mr. *. U. Lcvien, that he had "seep. red, and ■attempted to strangle his wife Strangers intervened, and Thomas then went home, and, using an axe, wrecked ail the furniture. . Thomas declared that he had surrendered himself because he was afraid he would murder his wife. In sentencing accused to three months'- hard labour the magistrate remarked that imprisonment wouJd ■enable him to be placed under observa--fcion. _ .
