'XMAS DECORATIONS.
DISCUSSION AT MEETING
A COMMITTEE APPOINTED,
After the finish of the business concerning what hours the shops should close at 'Xmas and New Year, at the *
meeting of business men last evening, Mr Battson brought up the matter of decorating the town for the 'Xmas festival. He considered that it would be as well to decorate in a similar manner as was done at the Jubilee. The chairman agreed the suggestion was a good one if greenery could be obtained and the shopkeepers were willing to contribute to the scheme. Mr Jorgensen said a few extra lights would be better than greenery, which would detract from the window displays. He suggested that the Chamber go into the matter of providing a free ferry for 'Xmas Eve. The chairman pointed out the Chamber usually spent from £lO to £l2 in making 'Xmas arrangements, and every available 'bus last year was put into operation. The idea was good, but what about finance?
Mr Arbury thought they could get the money all right. Mr Brown remarked that it would be impossible to get a free ferry, and Mr Hetherington pointed out that the ferry carried people continuously all day, and could not have dealt with heavier traffic.
Mr Danby said the continuous ferry could not cope with the traffic last year. The more attractions they offered the more people would come.
Mr Battson moved that the decorations be procured, and that the Borough be asked to light up the town for the whole week similar to what was done at Jubilee time. Mr Brown seconded, and the motion was carried by 20 votes to 3. A committee of Messrs Battson, Brown, Court and Millington was formed to further the arrangements.
