LABOUR DAY.
A MONSTER CARNIVAL. ON HIGH SCHOOL GROUNDS. On Monday next, Labour Day, there will be held on the High School grounds, Thames, a monster carnival, promoted for the benevolent funds of the Thames Volunteer Fire Brigade, Thames Miners’ Union, Thames Engineers’ Union, Thames Fishermen’s Union, and the Thames Rugby Union.
A Procession. Prior to the sports events, a procession, headed by the Regimental Band, will leave the Royal Hotel corner at 10 a.m., and prizes will be awarded to the best symbolical trades’ display, tradesmen’s decorated vehicle, decorated motor-ear and motor-cycle, decorated pram or go-cart, bicycle, trolley, best original costume, best comic display, and bes£ display by any primary or Sunday school. The Events. Valuable trophies are offered for the various sports events, which are extremely comprehensive, and cover racing, jumping, putting the shot, etc. The entries for the 120 yards and 220 yards open handicaps close this afternoon at 5 o’clock with Mr. L. Capper, Mary Street. Dancing. English, Scotch and Irish dances, starting at 1.30 p.m., will no" doubt draw a good many entries and a largo crowd of witnesses. There are two trophies for the piping competition. Baking Competitions. Tn connection with the baking competitions, all entries are to be on the ground at 10 a.m.. and competitors must enter in three classes to be eligible for the aggregate points prize. There are several events for younger children, and, given a fine day, there is much to offer the public in a good day’s outing, which, in capable hands, will go with a, swing.
