CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MONTHLY MEETING. PROGRESSIVE MOVES. SEVERAL REQUESTS CONSIDERED The monthly meeting of the Thames Chamber of Commerce was held this morning, when there were present Messrs. J. W. Danby (in the chair), J. Kernick, J. H. Ensor, F. Sehvyn Miller, Edwin Brown, J. Watt and C. R. Cooke. j Pipiroa Ferry. It was reported that nothing further had been done in the matter of the Pipiroa Ferry. Mr. Danby said there was a growing feeling in favour of a bridge, which was very gratifying. Mr. Miller thought they should have som.e temporary connection until the bridge is constructed. . Mr. Danby said the point at issue was a through road to Auckland. Thames had put up a sum of money to assist, and something ought to bo done.

It was resolved that the President confer with the riding members on the matter. Tapu-Coroglen Road. A reply was received from the Pub ire Works Department stating that the request for metalling the road from Tapu to Coroglen would have every consideration. Mr Markman’s Visit. Mr. Kernick reported on the visit of Mr. Markman and the representations made to him concerning a new Central Chief Post Office. It had been pointed out to him that the standard of buildings in 4’hames had considerably risen, and requests were made that any new building contemplated would be worthy of the town. The Council expressed its appreciation at the work done by the President and Secretary in placing the matter before the Secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department. New J.P.’s. In reply to the Chamber’s request for further Justices of the Peace to be made at Thames, the Minister of Justice (Sir James Parr) wrote stating that certain names recommended would be considered when further appointments were being made. Labour Day Carnival.

Thp Labour Day Carnival Committee asked for* the support of the Chamber in arranging the usual procession. The Chamber was in entire sympathy with the movement, and the business people will be helping in the matter. Automobile Association. Mr. Kernick reported on Mr. Chamtaloup’s visit. Mr. Danby said it was gratifying to find the interest being taken by motorists. Tlip Borough Council wrote that it was agreeable to campers using Wilson Street, Tararu, without charge, and .that water would be laid on and a stand pipe erected for use at the poin.t in question. Further arrangements were left in the hands of the President. Hikuai Settlers. The Hikuai Settlers’ Association wrote asking the Chamber’s, assistance in pushing the road via the Kauaeranga to completion. They were much isolated at present. It was resolved to place the matter before the Thames County Council, asking it to make strong representations to the Public Works 'Department. Miranda Trip. A letter was received from a •ocal shopkeeper stating that people on the Miranda side appreciated the free Christmas launch, and suggested that trips earlier would be of great advantage to them.' Mr. Danby supported the idea of earlier trips than just at Christmas time. It was decided to get in touch with the settlers on the matter of arranging a launch trip.
