POSITION IN FRANCE
A THREAT OF WAR
RELIGIOUS STRIFE THREATENED
(Reuter.)
PARIS, Sept 28
Revival of religious strife in France is threatened as the result of the french Cardinals’ letter to M. Herriot Legging him not to execute the decision to suppress tho French Embassy at the Vatican or strictly enforce the existing laws regarding religious congregations. They urge the mainctnance of a happy rapproachment between the Clrarch. and tho State which the war effected.
While the clerical newspaper Gaulvois considers the letter will profoundly impress the consciences of all not blinded to stupid sectarianism the newspaper Quotidien regards the letter as a demonstration of hostility against the Government and a provocation of civil war. It urges M. Herriot to accept the challenge to the Republic. The newspaper Oeuvre says the priestly unctuousness of the letter scarcely conceals its threat.
M. f&ERRIOT’S 1 REPLY
(Reuter.) PARIS, Sept. 28. Replying to the Cardinals’ letter, M. Herriot does not admit the peace of tho country is threatened by the measures recently taken. He declare 3 the Government will not interfei’e with the freedom of worship, but it cannot permit the French interest to ho defended by any authority except that of the Nation. ,
