ONGARUE DISASTER.
CONTINUATION OF INQUEST. CORONER’S VERDICT. (Press Association.) TAUMARUNUI, July 20. The inquest on the victims of the Ongarue disaster was continued yesterday. William Robert Davidson, engineer in charge of the Frankton-Marton section of the "line, said there was no record of any boulder having fallen on this section of the line previously. Ernest E. Gillon, chief mechanical engineer of railways, described the experiments the department had made regarding a light that could shine on the track in front of an engine, but nothing better had been found than what had previously been used.
The written evidence of Guard Hobson, Driver Stewart and Fireman Campbell was also produced.
The coroner said that so far his verdict would be that the cause of death of those killed in the smash was accidental, but he preferred to reserve any remaps upon the matter until he had an opportunity of reviewing the evidence heard at the inquest. He considered no ordinary foresight could have averted the accident. ~ .
