A VAGRANT.
ATTEMPTS SUICIDE.
VERY SERIOUS INJURIES. (From Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 5. -
A middle-aged man named John Cannody was admitted to the hospital yesterday with his throat cut. He .was at once taken to the operating room to have the wounds stitched up. The ease is. one of attempted suicide. Cannody appeared before the Court yesterday morning on a charge of vangrancy. He was convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. Seemingly he was a half-craz-ed individual suffering • from the effects of drink, and soon after being sentenced he seized an opportunity to creep out of the prisoners’ room and make a dash for the Courthouse door. He was promptly secured and returned to the room. The unhappy sequel occurred soon after the prisoner’s arrival at Mt. Eden gad, where he apparently got possession of a broken bottle and attempted to end his life by cutting his throat. It is understood that the injuries are of a very dangerous nature.
