Auckland outplayed their opponents in the open rushes', but the' South African .Hacks were too good for them, especially in line kicking. The first spell ended : South Africa 5,' Auckland 0. On resuming, Auckland-did some and twice looked like scoring. Then fine play by Townsend and Zeller gave the latter a try. Then V. Badeley opened the score for Auckland from a penalty kick.- After that the South African backs more or less ftook charge. Zeller (2), van Heerden and Tindell scored tries. Auckland's only score was a try by Ifwerson, which" Badeley converted, and the game ended: t South Africa 24, Auckland 8. The game was not spectacular j Auckland's combination was . poor and the tackling weak. The South Africans got the better of the scrums, and the'Auckland back's die not get enough of the ball, whereas tho South African v backs were continually handling it, and with good effect.
