SPRINGBOKS' TOUR.
SOUTHLAND DEFEATED. (Press Association). • INVERCARGILL, August 6
The ground was very soft, but the conditions overhead were excellent for the Springboks' match. The attendance was 12,000. , The Springboks won the toss, and Southland kicked off against a slight breeze. The game settled down quickly to a tight forward battle, the ball rarely being allowed doget out of the scrum. Five minutes after the start the ball came from a tight ruck, and after a passing rush ; Van Heerden shot over near the corner. The try was not con; verted. The Southland backs were not tackling well, and were handling the ball nervously. "Bad handling by the local backs gave Morkel possession after a speculator, and he passed to Meyer, who scored. Southland then attacked, but could not Break through. In the second spell, Southland hammered away with loose dribbling rushes. Then the Springboks attacked hard, but were penalised for picking the ball out of the scrum. The Southland forwards continued to attack. Michau. wiEh'

After another line-out the ball went.' to Vagi Hecrden, who raced for the corner. Ho was tackled,/but fell over, scoring a good try. No goal resulted. The inter-union match, . Paeroa. against Piako, resulted in a win for Paeroa by 12 to 6.
