At to-day's meeting of the Thames County Council a deputation consisting of Messrs French, McOabe, Murray, aaid Uinthridge, -Waited on the Council re the Tu-rua drain, and stated thai if the drain ran straight to the rivetf it would not interfere with property as at present, and as sti'aighitening would take it 21ft !><•- lov/ the -wharf, the- wharf also would not bo interfered with. Since the main drains had been enlarged, private drains had silted up, previenfc. ing owners from cleaning land. Mr MdClabe said if the drain were straightened, the water would carry, and thera would be no stagnation. Mr Biagnall said the County Engineer and tlie Govtesrnment Eingineer and his assistant had conferred on the subject of,siis. drain, and they had decided that if the drain Was straightened*-, it Would take in the road as at Matatoke. The report ot those conferring will be forwarded to Government. .

Mr McCabe said if a floodgate was erected, it would be on private properby, and Mr Frencih asked if the drain was widened, who would hare control, as it would be on private property. The Chairman said he was thoroughly conversant with what wa« required. Mr McOaba said the GovernmentEngineer had told him he knew nothing of the drains, and that if the Council did not make a move, they%ould erect floodgates on the x>undary of Bngnall Bros. - Or. Thct Chairman said plans mid specifications had been approved of by Government,, and repeated that the interests of the Council must be considered. A considerable sum had been expended on the road, and only during wirfcer, was any dim oulty experienced, and for nine months, the drain was, empty. C3r. Aidams washed to see the drain wihen the tide was out, to see what really was required. The dhaivni&iv said the fall was not sufficient, as the drain was empty in front and full at the back. It was resolved that the. Council! visit amd inspect the drain, after; which the "deputation, whose thanks to the Council were expressed by Mr French, withdrew, at the same time xirging the Cfounicil to do something in the matter. In connection -with the above subject, the Engineer, as a result of his conference with the Government Engineer, later reported that his recommendation was that the work: ol straightening be carried out, the Council to pay hall the cost. Or. D'eeble moved that a copy of tlie recommendation be sent to the deputation which had waited on the Council earlier.
