'MR ADAMS' ADDRESS
OASE FOR .HE»POM>EN TrS.
(Per United Press Association.)
WAIHI, February 4
Mr A. S. Adams' address ori behalf of the respondents lasted a.ll day. Hi: urgedl that the whole case was baseJ on the unfounded assumption that it was the returning officer's duty to see that voters voted in secret. On the contrary this dufrv rested on the voters themselves, if not the whole method of conducting elections would have to be recast. He contended that the petition: really resolved itself into allegations in the two alauses as v° the admittance of too many voters into the booth and the preservation of secrecy. Hie deprecated Constable Drisooll's evidence, making the point that he could have .given it when exaimined in chief and he dlid not do so till rewoallect.
