..' Mr 1 N. Al. Winter, headmaster, reported : —'"I have, the honour, to report that school ret-opened this day. A|^the r certificates 'of proficiency arenof' aliVyietj■-.^ls^ued- to the Primary Scfhools I cannot state definitely the niuaniber of scholars who are-seeking admission.'-this year. There are, howerret, 'already about a dozenr new paipils. Of tihlese several Kave quatifted for Juiaior National _SchokrsJiips, ani I am veiy hopeiful of ■ the prosjiieicts of the new -class. The results obtained at the public examiina.tions are as follows: One pupil passadißatrioulatiani, one qiuialified for Educaitiomi ißoaii'd's iSenior S'ohol'ai's.hips, ten passed, Civil Sieirvice Junior, and 25 qualified' foV Senior Free Places. I am glad to be able to report that a; g4od proportion/ .df the senior pupils 'are remaining at school, and I .hniVe ali <ead!y formed a matrioulation olasfe of six scholars whoi are specially promising."
—Increase of Staff.— Mrs E. F. Howell wi^ote: "I have tte honour to apply for a temporary appointment on the... .staff of the Thames High School. I had considerable teaching experience in England, and aim specially qualified to give instrutofcioni in. !Bniglißh, Frencd, and commercial subjects. I did a good deal of literary work while resident in Singapore, and enclose copies »f testdmoniiails with reference to this.
My knowledge of French is very practical and 'thorough, as I lived for \\ yeare in Bfelgium. I could be of considerable assistance in the clerical
work of school, as I am am p<xpert shorthamd writer and typist, and * thoroughly conversant with 'business methods."
It was_ decided to . inform) Mrs Biowell that the. Board has no vacancy at present. .

—Science Class at School of ■Mines.— Mi* Bruce, secretary, wrote: —"Tv reply to your letter of the 9th inst., asking if arrangemefnite could be made to take advanced classes in
chemistry and electricity from, the High School at the School of Mines, I am instructed by the Council to inform you! thai they mire willing to take such classes, and will do> every-
thing, possible! for carrying same out _ on a satisfactory basis. The time ior holding the classes cam be arranged between the head teacher of your
school and the director of tjhe School of Mines. I beg also to informi you that an elementary dnss, free to ali senior scholars of all schools, will 'bs started at the commencement of the first term in the ensuing yen-r, the, subject being electricity. The class will be open to all-scholars attending the High School who have passed t-hs sixth standard, or its equivalent." A vote of thanks to the Thames School of Mines Board was passed.
