The Battery Fatality.
HOW GATLAND MET HIS DEATH. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PAEROA, August 15. The inquest on the body of Vincent Young Gotland was held at Ko-mata this morning by Mr Coroner Forrest and a jury of six, Mr Edwin Edwards' being foreman:. Evidence was given by Messrs Young, Smith and MoMiken, battery manager, that deceased was found dead hanging over the shaft, being caught by his smock shirt on the j shaft, which: was wrapped round with j rope. . j It appears that he was raising the ; rope ito attach the belt, to a pulley, and must have slipped, falling over the shafting which was revolving about 70 times a minute. His body was badly lacerated, the boots having been torn from his feet and his abdomen badly bruised. Death must have been instantaneous. The verdict was "accidental death," no blamei. being, attachable to anyone. The jury expressed their sincere sympathy with' the ■ relatives of the* deceased. -
