The fiftii annual ball in aid of the Waihi Hospital was lield last night, and proved a. brilliant success. A man was arrested for drunkenness to-day. He will be charged as soon as he is in a fit condition to plead. The Citizens' Committee in conr nection with Father Hays' mission, meet at the Central Hall this evening at 7.30. - An interesting venture is being started by the officers of the Ist R'egiimenit, (A.M.R., the formation of mounted cadet squadrons. There were sales to-day of Victorias at Is sd, and Moanataiaris at 2s, 2d. There are buyers at Is 4d for Victorias and 2s 2d for Moanataiaris. May Queen shares showed another advance to-day and sales were made at 2s 6d and 2s Bd. At the noon call there were buyers at 2s 7d and no further sellers appearing. We remind our readers that the cantata "Soot and the Fairies," in aid of St. George's Sunday School, will be held at the Oddfellows' Hall on Friday evening. Another enjoyable social and dance, under the auspices of the Farmers' Union, will be held in the M:atatoke Hall on Tuesday, 15th inst. A full orchestra, will be in. attendance. Waiotahis showed another substantial advance to-day. Sales were recorded at 57s 6d, 63s 6d, 61s fld, 6'4s, 635, and there were buyers at 62s 9d with no sellers at that 2>rice. Connection, has almost been effected between, the rise from No. i Caledonian to the winze sunk by Lucas and party on the Red Queen dropper. The leader is already in hand in the rise and shows colors of gold. In connection with, the football match between Thames and Auckland, on, the 19th inst., the Wakatere will, rum an excursion, leaving Thames at 8.30 a.m. and returning on Sunday at 4 p.m. Return fare is ss. The over-crowding of the city schools is occupying the serious attention, of the Auckland Board of Education. In several schools accommodation was so limited that the children have to be taught in the porches and passages. Caledonian shares showed an advance to-day and exchanges were made at 2s lid and 3s Id, while "rights" were sold at Is Id up to' Is 4d. There were buyers quoted at 3a 3d subsequently, but sellers declined to quit. Tenders ha.vo been accepted 'at | Waihi for the erection of a new Pres^- j byteriani Church. At this morning's sitting of the local police court, Thomas Pennel, charged with the larceny of jewellery valued at £10, the property of Mrs Tetley, .of Paeroai, was brought up and formally remanded to Paeroa" to appear there on Wednesday, to answer the charge. Signor E. F. Zapaterra is at present at Thames arranging for the production of his bio-tableau, which 'consists of 7000 ft of films direct from Paris. The colored films of ballet dancing at the new opera house in Paris are said to. be the best of the kind seen, in the colony. Our Te Aroha correspondent writes —"A pleasing function took place in the Waiorongomai school room when Mr and Mrs Andrews, who have been here for the past twenty years, were Tendered a farewell social prior to their departure for the Thames, where they will make their future home.
