MR. McGOWAN AT COROMANDEL.

Mr McGowan held a very successful meeting at Coromandel on Saturday night,, the- .attendance being Hanger than at any previous e'ection meeting for many years. His remarks were chiefly confined to a refutation of the statements made by his opponent in connection with mining legislation and the amendments 1 recentiy made in. the Mining Act, special reference being made to the clauses dealing with the. eight hours' question and the amendment with regard to the power to work with a reduced number of men. His> statements as to the position in connection with eaohi of these matters were received with considerable appjkiuse, more especially when he maintained by reference ttt Hansard Hhiafj the paragraph quoted against his by Mr Lucas dealt onLy with Mr Guinness 1 ' Coal Mines Amendment Bill and not with the Mining Act at all. The sjeaker was listened to with attention throughout, and at the conclusion of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks and confidence, was carried almost unanimous'y.
