The General Election.
THE AUCKLAND SEATS. The approaching-general election of members, of the House of Representativs is now exciting a good deal of ivtterest, the election being less than three months distant. Last election saw eleven candidates for the three Auckland city seats, and before nomination day there may be as many for the coming election. So far the Opposition party is not. represented at all in the list, but doubtless some effort will be made to bring-out candidates in that interest. Two of the sitting members, Messrs W. J. Napier and J. H. Witheford, will seek re-election, the third, Mr Geo. Fowlds, having decided! to seek election for the new suburban/ seat of Grey Lynn:. Then Mr F. E. Baume, who was unsuccessful at the last election,, will certainly have another try for the city, : . and Mr Hector Sims on. has announced himself. There will also bo two labor candidates. A requisition! is now being, largely signed in the city, asking Mr Alfred Kidd', the present Mayor, to be a candidate, and Ec may be regarded as almost certain to' come forward. Of the labour men, Mr Arthur Rosier, who has twice sought election; for the city, aaid Mr John Fawcus, one of the labour appointees' on thie Conciliation, Board, are most likely to bei selected. There is already a certainty of a contest in Parnell. Mr Frank Lawry, the sitting member, will be in the field, and Mr J. M. Shera, an: ex-memr ber for Auckland city, is also a certain candidate, coming forward as an Independent Liberal. Mr Seymour Thorne George has been mentioned. as a likly candidate, but he is at present] in England, andl hisl intentions'are not known. For Eden the only candidate imi the, field, is Mr Jolim Bollard, the sitting member. Waitemata has a candidate already announced in Mr E. W. Alison, aMyor of Devonport, Mr J. C. Macky, an ex-Mayor of Devonport, has been ] mentioned, but has never personally intimated his intention! of coming forward, and tU« only other candidate so far spoken, of is Mr W. E. Johns, school master. Upper Warwera, Manukau will provide anl interesting contest. , Sir G. M. ORorke, the sitting member and Speaker of the House of Representatives, will seek election for his old constituncy, but will have to 1 fight! Mr M. M. Kjrkbride (president of the Farmers' Union), who will come forward in the Opposition interest.
