Henry Cameron Gillespie.

It is with sincere regret we have to announce the sudden death, of Mr H. C. G tiles-pie. It appeals he rose early this morning and asked Mrs Gillespie to get his breakfast quickly, as he wished to get to 1 the wharf before the Wakatera left. She did so, meanwhile Mr Gilleapie walked) about tli© garden and yards of his residence. Breakfast being ready Mrs Gillespie went outside to call ihim, and much to her consternation found hinii in a heap in the yard andl bleeding from, a large wound in the forehead over the temple. He was quickly taken to liis bed, and Mr John Read summoned. A messenger was sent! pos(b haste far Dr. Lapraik, who without waitingfo properly dress, Illumedl to Parawai. Meantime every effort was made restore Mr Gillespie by placing warm cloths to his heailt and by chaffing his limbs, but without avail. Onl arrival the 1 doctor pronounced life extinct. The deceased never spoke from! -the time he was; discovered by his wife. The opinion of the doctor is that death resulted from an apoplectic attack, a.nd no* from'tbie fall. He has: been in his usual health for months past, but saw Dr. Lapraik on Friday last. There 1 will not be an inquesjt, as the doctor will give a certificate as to the cause of death. Mr Gillespie had not complained of being unwell, and im his capacity of church warden was at St. George's Church last evening. He walked tome from church with Mr Bush, junior, and was in his usual good spirits, joking and laughing over current affairs. The" event has cast quite a gloom over the township, for the deceased was one of the 'oldest residents', and well known. He was one of the land marks of tlh'e town, as one sympathising friend remarked this morning. He was kind hearted, extremely good tempered, always had a joke to tell; or was ready to indulge in a bifc • of bantering chaffing, was> good nlaitured, willing to do ai good! turn to a friend or neighbour, and we believe without an emeiny on the goldfield. He has been mi business on the Thames for 30 years in one linei or the other, for many years as shipping: agent, first for Fraser and Timne, for the Auckland steamers, and for their successors, thie Northern Steamship Company. Ini the very early days he was manager of the Tararu tramways when under the Provincial Council, then of the railway line to Tararu, -priding, himself itlhafc Ire was the oldest railway manager in the colony. Then he was; partner wilfch the late Win. Souter as timber and general merchants. Mr Gillespie had great experience in the management of timber mills, and for a great part of hia life was: conntectedi ■ wiibh the industry and. with Messrs Gibbons Bros, a,nd the Kauri Timber Company. He was a .native of Cork, Ireland, and early mi life came Jo 1-the colonies., He was twice married, and leaves a large family, Mr Henry G. Gillesipie being his eldest sonl
