One boat load swamped, and another was impaled on a spar while trying to escape the suction from the sinking steamer.
The captain locked himself in the state room 1 and sank with the ship.
Captain Hocht, of the German navy, saved himself by the aid of a life belt.
The missing include Mr D. Wildman, American Consul, and General Hongx Kongj his wife and .two children .
Details of the wreck show that -Pilot Jordan when entering the Golden Gate warned Captain Ward that it was unsafe to . proceed owing to the fog, but the advice was disregarded. Ho shouted to all to take to the .boats.
The Chinese aboard howled frantically. Women screamed piteously, "and. everybody scrambled for the -boats,, and some jumped overboard.
