The Rival Cables.

SYDNEY, April 17. The Daily Telegraph, in urging the acceptancie of the Cape Cable, says that when the 'aub^idy expires in a few weeks, the Eastern Extension Company, being tinder no obligation to maintain the present tariff, can raise the rates as they please. D! they chose to go so far they could even refuse to transport messages. It is fortunately not too late for New South Walea and Victoria! to repair their mistake, which they have an opportunity of repairing at the Melbourns Premiers' conference. MELBOURNE, April 17.
The Age, advocating the acceptance of the Cape cable . agreement, says the importance of cables in wr.r-'time ia now so fully appreciated, and their possession gives so much advantage to the 1 power* controlling them, that no one would feel any surprise if the Imperial Government proposed to take over all the cables connecting the Home country with India, Canada and the Australian colonies. They might precede a step in this direction by providing in any agreement regarding the Cape cable, that the Government should have the option, alter a certain time, of acquiring the cable at its current market value. This would dissipate the misgivings as to the future action of the Eastern Extension. Company.
