Paris, February 20. In OoQgress the Republicans greeted M Loubet's election with cheers.
la returning thank 3M. Lonbet declared he would promote pacification and order. He hoped to establish friendly relations with Parliament. The street demonstrations were the outcome of preconcerted rowdyism. Forty»six persons were injured, including 14 policemen; 250 arrests were made.
M. Dupuy has consented to retain office if Dreyfus' revision policy is nnaltered.
Congress was orderly, excepting that M. l>eroulede accused M. Loubet of being mixed up in the Panama Canal scandal, and a few members attempted to speak after voting and were allowed to do so.
M. Meline tried to prevent his supporters voting for himself. Fifty votes were given among eight other candidates, M. Covaiguac receiving 23.
The new President is a lawyer, fond ot literature snd music, and of an affable disposition, and is indifferent to pomp.
rlhe Radical and Socialist news* papers in Paris support M. Loubet. The Continental newspapers generally are favorable to M. Loubet's election, but the St. Petersburg papers assume a cool tone.
In France the new President is regarded as an honest and well meaning but rather weak man.
Paris, February 2 X EXPULSION OF A JOURNALIST.
M. Dupuy has expelled the correspondent of the German newspaper Neve Freie Presse from Paris, owing to his Dreyfusite attitude.
Sydney, February 20. The flags are flying half-mast on account of the death of President Faure. The Governors of the various colonies, on behalf of the Governments, have forwarded messages of condolence to Madame Faure and the French nation.
