it is reported that all the ships, except one, of Cerveras' squadron, ran ashore on fire, and their magazines exploded. General Toval succeeded General Linares as commander at Santiago. The American brigade, under Brigadier Hawkins, assisted the dismounted cavalry nan and made a magnificent charge up the hill on Oaney. The Spaniards, using Mauser riftas, threw a murderous hail at the charging troops, staggering the men. The assailants repeatedly threw themselves on the ground to escape the fire, and often showed signs of slackening. Then they recharged up the hillside. The ground was strewn with dead and wounded.

Several hand-to-hand fights took place at Oaney before the Spaniards were driven out.

Brigadier Hawkins was among .the wounded.

In the attack on San Juan forts on Saturday the Michigan Volunteers and Roosevelt's Cowboy regimentdisplayed reckless valor.

News has heen reoeived that the American cruiser Charleston captured the Ladrone Islands and has taken the Governor prisoner to Manila. Later reports state that Admiral Cerveras is aboard the armoured cruiser Vizoaya, having escaped from Santiago harbour, to sea. Sampson's ships are pursuing the Vizcaya.
