REPORT FROM GENERAL SHAFTER.
OPERATIONS TEMPORARILY
SUSPENDED.
A FAULTY COMMISSARIAT,
ADMIRAL SAMPSON'S FLEET IN SANTIAGO HARBOUR.
{.Beoeivedat Walcapuaka, July 6, 9.5 a.m"
Washington, July 4. During the attack on Santiago, General Linares was badly wounded and General Vararey and two of his aide-decamps were killed. General Shatter reports he has been obliged to suspend any further attack on the Spanish lines until he receives reinforcements.
He points out that his situation ha? been rendered precarious by the faulty natuie of the commisstanat arrangements and the tremendous fighting capacity of the Spaniards. The Spanish forces, he adds, occupy an almost impregnable position. Both the New York Herald and the Daily Telegraph report that Admiral Sampson's fleet has passed Fort Morro and his vessels are crowding into Santiago harbour.
