CARROLL " NOT GUILTS'." DEMONSTRATION BY THE PEOPLE. (By Telegraph-Own Correspondent) Auckland, 'March 19. The case against Thomas Carroll of having thrown vitriol at Robert R. Jewell, at Paeroa, on January 20th, with intent to disfigure him was concluded last night, and at twenty minutes to twelve the jury returned a verdict of " not guilty." The prisoner was then discharged. A very unusual demonstration of approval of the public took place when the verdict was announced. His Honor said it was the most disgrace- | ful scene he had ever witnessed and he had a good mind to make an example j of some of those whe had been foolish to applaud. Amongst those present were several ladies who also joined in the applause.
