THE COROMANDEL ELECTION.

(To the Editor of the Evbnino Stab.)

Sib,—ln view of the impending contest for the representation of the Coromandel electorate, it may not be amiss in the interest of the eleotors to review the claims which one of the candidates un« doubtedly possesses on the suffrage of the miners especially, and indirectly on all classes of tae community. To those who during the eighteen months immediately succeeding the Ist of August, 1867, were actively engaged in developing the resources of the peninsula, it would be superfluous to recapitulate the exertions nude and the influences usrd by Mr Jas. Mackay, junr.; but it can do no harm to remind one and all that to Mr Mackay'i self-sacrifice, at considerable personal inconvenience, the official machinery was indebted for any vitality which it possessed. Certainly the exhausted exchequer of the Provincial Government was of little use in smoothing the difficulties of the early prospectors. During an experience of forty one years in New Zealand I have not been an unobservant spectator of public men; and I have not witnessed ft display of greater administrative ability than that exhibited by Mr Mackay. Business men and tradesmen who have experienced the benefits of his influence in their struggles to obtain a footing in the district, should not pretend to ape the " Pharaoh who knew not Joseph."—l am, &0-, Slams Castlh.
