Subsidies to the Cable Company.

Wellington, This day. The Government have received a communication from the Cable Company asking them jointly, with New South Wales, to continue ihe subsidy to cable between Australia and JNew Zealand for a further period of ten years. The New Zealand Government have expressed a strong inclination to discontinue the subsidy, and as the line is now finished, those using it should be made to pay. They are, however, in communication with !he Sydney Government on the question. The Victorian Government have asked the Government of New Zealand to reduce the charge on cable along New Zealand land lines to 6d per ten words, but the Commissioner of Telegraphs bas declined to accede to the request.
