This day.

The gaol enquiry commenced this morning. At the outset Mr Caldwell, late governor, made strenuous efforts to eetan adjournment until his counsel could attend, but the Commissioners decided to proceed with the investigation, leaving it optional with Mr Stout to cross-examine witnesses at a future stage. Mr Caldwell then retired. Two prisoners were examined and gavw evidence thtfc great cruelty hnd b«»en practised within the Gaol walls. The enquiry was adjourned till thi< afternoon.
