Otunui.
A gentleman who has visited the Ota* nui district supplies the following :—
According to promise, I send you an account of my trip to Otunui. I will speak first of the road; it is of good grade, but if the Engineer passes it as now made, it will be a sin. Many places on the line are not three feet in the solid, instead of six; in, some places off the road it has slipped down. I hope Mr Aitken will see to this. Now, as to the show in the mines visited ; I went straight to the Oriental No. 1 with two friends. The drives were locked up, the men in the bush getting timber, and the boss in town with the key, so there waa no getting in there. ; t r-!'r
We then visited the Anglo»Maorl and Tookey mines, where we were shown some very nice golden stone and a splendid show in driving. I saw more work done on this claim than on any ■ other in the Otunui district.
The Bonanza we did not- visit, as we heard that the men were away till some affairs had been settled.
We then made tracks for the Comet ground, which looks placed for something good. We found the men at'work in good, healthy country, but on tight, tough sandstone. Black metallic veins cross their work. We were given to understand that they were driving to cut a lead supposed to be the Eureka. . They took us to the place, and showed us the lead—a good-looking reef, rather broken, but healthy. We next visited the Eureka mine, and saw there what we do not often ;see. Qbld was to be seen in stringers, gold in casing, gold in white and in brown rock—gold, in fact, everywhere. They have a large quantity of stone out for crushing, and you can pick up golden stone from the heap. Altogether, this is the best show I have seen for a long time. I believe the Otunui district will prove very rich and a blessing to the Thames.
