OUR MIRTHS.

QUEEN OF BEAUTY

Cleaning up eventuated at the battery yesterday for the capital yield of 4370zs retorted gold. This is not the whole of the return for the month, as two parcels have already been banked, and another will, be to hand to morrow. The total quantity of quartz crushed since last cleaning up is 130 loads of general'dirt, mostly from No. 9. level, aad about 400 pounds of picked stone and specimens. The total yield for the month, so far, is711ozs 16dwts gold—a splendid returti when it is remembered thaf it all came from workings over 500 ft below the surface. The stopes on the reef should be started very soon, and judging by the returns from the winze, the monthly yields for some time to come will equal and very likely surpass that banked this month. The full force of the battery is now employed on quartz from the bottom level. The manager reportsi as follows :— During the fortnight the drive on the reef

in the bottom level has been extended 26 feet, and the reef throughout that distance has averaged 14 feet in thickness from wall to wall, the whole of which has been sent to the battery, and is there showing up for an excellent return. Throughout the fortnight gold has been in sight every day, and during that time 3cwt of specimens and lewt of picked stone have been obtained, which speaks well for the quality of the reef, especially as none of the veins in which this gold was found were cut in the winze, the winze being to the left of them, and more into the hanging wall side of the reef. The winze was holed through into the bottom level last week, and the drive is now nearly timbered up close to the face. In the No. 7 level, the drive on the reef west has been extended 31 feet; the reef continues to be two feet thick, and of the same character as last reported upon. There has been but little work in No. 6 level, as the mullock in the level is being kept for the purposes of filling up (he stopes below, when stoping is commenced. The pumps and machinery are all in good working order and condition, and keeping down the water at less than half speed, or 4| strokes per minute—Geobge Black.

The total from the cleaning up is 4890zs melted gold from 130 tons from bottom level, and 30 tons from No, f? t lerelr—the latter averaging lOdwts.----- •- ■••■- ---MOANATAIKt- 1 Cleaning up for about five weeks' workeventuated at the battery yesterday, and the amalgam was retorted in the after noon for the good return of 2560zs gold, which was reduced on melting to 2540zs 6dwts. For this yield only 180 tons of quartz were treated from all parts of the mine. It is encouraging to see this mine again producing payable quartz, especially as the gold this month was more from general dirt than picked stone, 10 there are reasonable grounds for supposing that good returns will come to hand for some time. GOLD KETUKNS. Albubnia.—Sawyer and party hare treated a parcel of quartz at the company's mill for the yield of 23ozs gold.
