Deputation to Sir George Grey.
THE WAIKATO AND THAMES RAILWAY.
A deputation consisting of His Worship \ the Mayor of Thames, Dr. Kilgour ; the Chairman of the County Council, Mr Brodie ; the Chairman of Parawai Highway Board, .Mr Carpenter, waited upon the Premier, Sir George Grey, and the hon. the Native Minister, Mr Sheehan, at the Ministerial offices to-day inreference to the proposed construction of a railway from Thames to Waikato. The deputation had been appointed at a meeting of persons interested, held at the Thames, and on being introduced to Sir Geo.ge Grey urged the importance of the proposed line in the interests of the mining population of Thames golc!6eld, as were the settlers
of the Waikato, and intervening districts. Sir Georgo Grey assured them of liis sincere desiro that in time the Thames and Waikato may become united by a permanent line of rail, such as that sought to bo obtained. He assured them that everything was being done to acquire the land through which it was proposed to construct the line, nnd he had reason to hope it would not be very long before every obstacle to the carrying out of the scheme would be removed. The deputation thanked the Premier for his ready sympathy in the object of their mission, and retired, fully satisfied that the object for which they had interviewed Sir George Grey was in a fair way of accomplishment.—Auckland Star.
