WELLINGTON.
Tuesday.
In replying to a statement published that Colonel Whitmore was about to retire from the Cabinet in order to assume the office of Chief Commissioner of Armed Constabulary, the Post says:— " Owing io Colonel Moule fs resignation as chief commissioner of the Armed Constabulary, a difficulty arises in performing a certain official act required to be done in conformity to the law by the Commissioner, and it has therefore been arranged that suck duties as have previously devolved upon the Commissioner will now be added to those of the Minister for Defence for the time being. Col. Whitmore will therefore be gazetted Commissioner of the Armed Constabulary in addition to his present portfolio of Colonial Secretary, but will receive no salary or allowance in connection with the former office. This arrangement, as to the Coknmissionership of Armed Constabulary, will continue so long only as Colonel Whitmore remains a member of the present Government. It is understood that there is no intention to revive the appointment lately held by Colonel Moule." :
