A Wellington Opinion.
Regarding the deputation to Sir George to stand for the Thames, the New Zealand Times says:—" If the people of the Thames be not very much changed they
will resent the circumstances under which Sir George Grey has been presented to them as a candidate. In the first place, by his acceptance of a seat for Auckland^ City West he plainly says to them—' Our object is to get as many men into Parliament pledged to blindly foliow ; my leadership as possible. I know tjjjatyou will not return such a mere automaton as i could !wish,/and I know that the' City West will. A I therefore give ttp-imy seat, for that'place, and appeal to yo'uinalt the glory of Superintendent and leader of the Opposition.' This, though in some respects complimentary to the good sense of the Thames '-electors;"re "a":direct insult .'to them as holders of the franchise. They are asked—in a less servile,,manner .perhaps,,-butj still none the less as servants, to put themselves in, the hands of a man supported by a selfish party in Auckland. It is not likely that they would respond to such a request, and it is still less likely,; if we consider further how Sir.George came to be brought forward. A deputation from Auckland it was who asked him to stand. The Aucklanders evidently made up their minds that they had no disengaged candidate handy of sufficient calibre to suit the good sense of the Thames electors. Sir George is a clever man, a fluent speaker; besides, he is Sir George Grey! Accordingly they asked him to do that, for f them w.hich none amongst them weres competent ftq - do. Surely if the Thames people themselves wanted Sir George they could have ap-, pointed a deputation' from amongst themselves to ha-^waited upon him. That they did no j form such a deputation is tolerable evidence that .they have no frantic desire for him. That the Auckland people have taken upon themselves to speak for the Thames will we believe, in vulgar language, ' set up the backs ' of the latter, and cause the deserved rejection of Sir George .Grey." . w
