Me Macnab yesterday afternoon handed over a cheque for £50 to Mr J. E. Macdonald the amount of a bet he lost over the Mayoral election. . A bottle of " fiz " was cracked on the occasion, and a matter that has been pretty freely discussed during the last fortnight is now satisfactorily disposed of. Mr Macdonald. left for Auckland just after the election was over, and that is the reason the money was not paid to him before by Mr Macnab. The £50 has already been given to the Hospital.
A coBBBspoNDENT writes to correct an unintentional error in the report on the History Prizes. He says :—J?or Frank Weston read Frederick Weston. The donor of the £2 prize, to the best boy in the Shellback school is a lady, and not a gentleman. A liberty was also taken with. Miss Strickland's name.
We would draw attention to an announcement of the programme which is to take place to-night at tha Academy of Music. The name of Mr W. H. Reed is a sufficient guarantee that there will be food for abundance of laughter, while the musical feats he intends to perform will be more varied than ever. He is assisted by his brothers and other well known artistes at the Thames. " Hard labour" Mr Heed informs us will commence at ten, which we take to mean that any holder of front seats who feel so disposed will have the opportunity of dancing to his or her heart's content for an hour and a-half.
Me S. Yotjng of the Queen's Hotel has given a prize to be competed for in a running match on Monday next by members of the Hibernian ana Protestant Alliance Friendly Societies at the Hospital Demonstration.
A requisition to Mr John Gibbons to become a candidate for the Assembly, and his acceptance thereof appear in our advertising columns to-day. Mr Gibbons has been spoken of as a probable candidate for some time. He has not yet published an address as to his policy, but from the prominent part he took at the meeting held on the Thames to consider the Government measures brought down .last session, we know him to be an Abolitionist to the backbone.
