AUCKLAND NOTES.
PBOM OUR SPECIAL COBBESPOKDENT. Thursday. Increase ia the Police. Another " worthy" member of the force has been promoted to a Sub-Inspec-torship. We have now two Inspectors and a Sub, with three Sergeants and an embryo Sergeant Major, far beyond the appropriation sanctioned by the Council, and out of all proportion to necessities as regards the number of officers. No wonder that representatives in all parts of the colony should be lamenting the heavy cost of some of our depariments.
Mr Shoohan will be back here on the 16th instant, and intends contesting Bodney, and his election is considered a certainty by those who are able to form a sound political opinion. Farnell, Moat, Shepherd, and Tery likely Lloyd, of the Wade, will all be nominated.
The Agents of the Mail Line. It is now stated that Henderson and Macfarlane are likely to be re-appointed agents for the new line, but it is doubtful, owing, as it is stated, to the fact of one of Mr Whitaker's sons being now a> partner in the firm of Owen and Graham. I do not vouch for the accuracy of the report, but it seems probable.
Mr Swaasoa, who has been ailing for several days, is so far recovered as to be able to move about once more. Another complimentary mark of respect has been paid him by the Newton Highway Board. The Mayor. There is a good deal of "jockeying" going on about the comingelection. Only that one of the enemy found out the hole and corner movements of the interested parties there would certainly be strong chances of Mr Hurst having a walk over. For the credit of our city it is well that the details of the plot did not bear fruit. Mr Hurst's success in the Mayoralty would very likely be the meansof his beiug a candidate for Waitemata. Mr Yon der Heyde or Mr Thomas Henderson will announce themselves as candidates ori" Friday. Franklyn. Buckland is notlikely to stand for reelection, May will. Both gentlemen only received a vote of thanks at Tuesday night's Papakura meeting. " Their utterances are in strange contrast with the able manifesto of Mr Macandrew, the Superintendent of (Jtago as to Government matters present and future, and which has been received and extensively read in and about the city and country districts. Other Moves. Some of the Government hangers-on have been hatching plans to further the '"interestipf their party, and in one or two jaStaSSEs have cast baits to catch amongst others your correspondent; but no go. Pretty little games are going on, but those who hold both bowers and ace are not likely to be euchred.
